Do symptoms of autism change over time?
For many children, autism symptoms improve with treatment and with age. Some children with autism grow up to lead normal or near-normal lives. Children whose language skills regress early in life, usually before the age of 3, appear to be at risk of developing epilepsy or seizure-like brain activity. During adolescence, some children with autism may become depressed or experience behavioral problems, suggesting a possible link to the amount of testosterone in the body and it‘s affect on autism. Often learning problems like dyslexia, dysphasia, and adhd , sensory integration disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, or Tourette’s go along with autism, and these things are usually not caught at the same time the initial diagnosis for autism is given. So, what starts with a diagnosis of autism can grow into more diagnoses over time. Also, as therapy works on these issues and the children mature, the severity of the autism diagnosis can change, depending on the doctor.
